How Solar Thermal (Hot Water) Systems Work

There are four main parts to a typical pumped solar system: solar collectors, a water store, connecting pipe work, and controls, typically consisting of a pump and a controller. The collectors fitted to the roof collect heat from light radiation, using it to heat water. This water is then circulated to the store which is fitted with a dedicated coil to transfer heat into the store. The controller monitors the temperatures in the collectors and in the store via dedicated temperature sensors, and will activate the solar pump to circulate heat from the collector to the store when available.

The collectors installed by The Solar Installers are the latest evacuated-tube collectors which feature parallel rows of transparent glass tubes. Each tube contains a glass outer tube and metal absorber tube attached to a fin. The fin’s coating absorbs solar energy but inhibits radiative heat loss to ensure maximum thermal efficiency.

Ideally, solar collectors should be south-facing, free of shade and pitched at an angle of between 20 and 50 degrees, but panels facing between south-east or south-west will also operate efficiently. We can also supply specially designed split systems which provide an effective solution for people with an east/west facing pitched roof.

We can also supply customised A frames for customers who wish to mount the panels on flat roof.

An optimum sized / positioned solar water heating system from The Solar Installers should be able to provide between 50% and 70% of the annual domestic hot water demand. In many cases 100% of the hot water requirement will be met during the Summer months. Overall, an efficient system will provide most of a household’s hot water requirements from April to September and significantly raise the water temperature during the Winter months.

Installation of a solar water system does not generally require planning permission, but if your property is listed or in a conservation area then we will be able to advise and assist in gaining any necessary permissions.

And finally, for complete peace of mind, The Solar Installers give a full 25 year guarantee on the collectors and cylinder along with a 3 year guarantee on the necessary piping and system controllers.
